Successful Collaboration with Rocket Fibre, a rural fibre broadband provider

We are excited to share the highlights of our recent project with our friends at Rocket Fibre, where we implemented a comprehensive HPE Blade Server and SAN solution. Our Pre-Sales consultants and Technical Engineers at Intelligent Servers worked closely with Rocket Fibre to ensure that every aspect of the project ran smoothly—from initial configuration discussions to installation, remote setup, and training.

Project Highlights

Here’s a snapshot of what our engineers successfully installed and configured:

  1. Configured the HPE Synergy 12000 Frame

We set up the HPE Synergy 40Gbit Virtual Connect Switches with Layer 2 Trunking, enabling VLANs to seamlessly traverse from the core Cisco Nexus 93180YC-EX network switches to the HPE Synergy 480 Gen10 Blade Servers.

  1. Optimised Core Network Switches

Our team configured the Cisco Nexus switches to accommodate all of Rocket Fibre's VLANs, established a Cisco Virtual Port Channel (vPC) peering between them, and implemented Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation (MLAG) for core switch redundancy and uplink load balancing with the HPE Synergy Frame.

  1. Enhanced Storage Reliability

We configured two HPE 3PAR 8450 SAN storage arrays in a synchronous replication setup, ensuring instantaneous SAN storage failover in the event of a primary SAN failure.

  1. Set Up Fibre Channel Zoning

The Cisco MDS 9250i Fibre Channel SAN switches were configured to present LUNs from the HPE 3PAR SANs through the HPE Synergy 16Gbit Fibre Channel Virtual Connect Switches to the Blade Servers.

  1. Implemented FCIP for Future DR Resiliency

We configured the Cisco MDS 9250i with Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) to enable a stretched Fibre Channel SAN fabric over Rocket Fibre's 10Gbit Ethernet circuits, laying the groundwork for future disaster recovery between data centres.

  1. Deployed VMware Solutions

We installed VMware vSphere 8 on all HPE Synergy 480 Gen10 blades and set up VMware vCenter 8, configuring the servers in a VMware High Availability (HA) Cluster with Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) for optimal performance and uptime.

  1. Provided Comprehensive Training

To ensure the Rocket Fibre team was well-equipped, we provided remote training on all configuration elements, covering basic Layer 2 Cisco NX-OS CLI commands, Cisco MDS NX-OS Fibre Channel zoning, and managing HPE 3PAR LUNs with VMware vSphere 8.
